Roger Federer, the Greatest Tennis Player to Play the Game
I used to hate Roger. I hated him because he dominated some of my favorite players. Some of the best guys in the game were getting walked all over by this guy and he wasn’t even breaking a sweat. Then it hit me, I disliked him because he was too good and that wasn’t me. I’m not a “hater”. So several years ago I started to warm up to the guy and now he is my favorite player. The man exudes class, on and off the tennis court.
Even a die hard Federer fan was starting to doubt him after his Australian Open semi final exit in 2008 and his next two grand slam final losses to Rafael Nadal. Make no mistake now, he is back and he is the greatest tennis player to play the game, ever.
Roger Federer has won three of the last four grand slams since the 2008 US Open when he squashed Andy Murray for his fifth US Open title. The man is back and he is unstoppable.
After his teary eyed loss to Rafael Nadal in the 2009 Australian Open finals, he came back and beat Nadal on Clay in Madrid and won the 2009 French Open after Nadal’s early exit.
To top off his year, he walks through every round at Wimbledon and beats Andy Roddick in the finals by shear will. He shouldn’t have won that match. Andy was outplaying him. Andy wanted just as bad. Roger prevailed because he is the best, ever.
A few months ago people were saying that Rafael Nadal was going to pass him and leave him in the dust. They were saying he couldn’t beat him. What they don’t realize about Nadal is that he can’t keep that level of play up forever. He is injured now with tendonitus of the knees, which is serious. He body is breaking down becasue he is playing like a mad man.
You have to give credit to a guy like Roger Federer who has been playing at the top of his game without any serious injury for 11 years. That is simply astounding.
He is not at the top of his game. In fact he is on the decline. His forehand isn’t what it used to be. He dances around but not with the same finess. He is 27, soon to be 28, which is the twilight of most modern tennis player’s careers, yet he is still winning grand slams and he is # 1 again. It defies logic and reason, but he is the man and he is the best ever.
